First time trying west African food and this place made me a fan. The portion size is excellent, this ain't no skimpy chipotle type of bowl. They pack this to the top. The chicken and steak were good, but what puts it over the top was the seasoning. They do not skimp on seasoning. From the meat, rice, and sauce.....everything was packed with flavor and a nice kick (this is coming from an Indian dude). Highly recommend, run...don't walk there. Please do step outside your comfort zone, cause you'll find gems like this place.
Finally checked out Suya Suya a few weeks back with Anna S. Anna ordered the Egusi over Fufu while the three of us ordered Suya Bowls. The three of us happened to have ordered different rice for our bases, allowing us to have a taste of all the different rice options offered by the restaurant. The Suya Bowls were a substantial amount of food, mainly because the plate came with large portions of rice. Don't get me wrong, the rice was delicious, in fact, you can't go wrong with any of the 3 rice options, but seeing that the restaurant is called Suya Suya, I thought they would highlite the Suya more than the rice. From pictures, the Suya Bowl came with sliced onions with white sauce, which doesn't particularly do it for me as a vegetable side, so I selected the brussels sprouts for my Suya, and only got 5-6 brussels sprouts. Doesn't feel like a lot of brussel sprouts next to the mountain of rice. You definitely get more Suya if you go with the meats. The Suya Bowl also comes with your choice of plantains or cornbread. The entire bowl just feels very carb heavy and unbalanced. Anna's Egusi over Fufu was tasty but was too spicy for our group. Overall, Suya Suya offers tasty food at reasonable prices, but I would definitely recommend ordering an extra side of Suya with your Suya Bowl.
I really like this place even though I didn't like the dish I ordered. The waitress recommended first timers to get the Suya bowl combo but I wanted to be adventurous and went for the egusi over fufu. I have had fufu before and really liked it but I've never had egusi. It was yummy but just way too spicy for my taste. I couldn't finish my food; all the while I was drooling over all the suya bowls my partner and my friends got. The meat is seasoned so well and the rice is tasty. I highly recommend coming to try their suya bowls! This place is very casual but still has plenty of room and seating if you want to eat there.
The food: Amazing. 10/10. I had the egusi with fufu and the steak Suya. There are options to have the spicy vs non spicy which is definitely a plus. I had a blast with the egusi . The service was excellent. I went there before the AFCON finale match between Ivory Coast & Nigeria and the staff were making jokes about who was going to win lol, immaculate ambiance. Overall I give this place 5 stars because most African restaurants in Philly aren't as thorough as this place which is something I appreciate.
Been here a couple of times and came to the same conclusion -- the "mains" of the meals are the least interesting (some might say "good") parts and the sides/sauces are where the action is. The rices are all super flavorful. The sauces too. Both the chicken and the shrimp were kind of under seasoned, but as a component of a bowl, they work. It's a nice switch up for fast casual. And the service has always been very friendly.
I know little of West African cuisine, but i was excited to try it. The spicy rice dish with Brussels sprouts was good. My companion and I each got a vegan dish. I really enjoyed my hibiscus ginger drink. BIG portions. I made several meals from my lunch. It's a no-frills spot where you order at the counter. I look forward to returning to try the meat dishes.
Blown away by Suya Suya and really impressed with the Chicken Suya bowl I enjoyed in their shop on Fairmount. A few things to love: + Going and ordering/eating in person is a win because you can get personalized recommendations from their stellar, helpful, joyful team. I love when I ask something and get an absolutely definitive response, which was the case here at Suya Suya. I wouldn't have gotten the hibiscus tea without this team members guidance and the hibiscus tea is unmissable! + Talk about bang for your buck! I got three meal out of my ~$13 Suya bowl and that is simply a miracle. Never mind the fact that it reheats wonderfully and is super delicious next day. + I went the the chicken "less spicy" option and it was perfect for my taste. Paired with the jollof rice, super flavorful without being overwhelming. + Do not skip the plantain! I will be back time and time again and can't wait to make it a go-to when I am in NoLibs.
The menu is very simple, you pick the protein, the heat level, the rice, and the side dish. I picked chicken with jolof rice, and plantains . Chicken was tender and had good flavor. I highly recommend the jolof rice, it has very nice smoky flavor. I picked not spicy sauce and it tasted like sweet ranch. Plantains were not sweet. The platter also comes with some shredded cabbage. Beef pie: it reminds me of Jamaican beef patty but more doughy. It's ok, you can skip it.
Delicious casual "fast food" that I would highly recommend! You can choose to eat inside or outside. It's byo and everything is self serve. Order your food at the front. They do not offer water so either bring your own or buy some at the store! My bf and I ordered the Suya bowls. I ordered the chicken bowl, mild heat, jollof rice, white sauce and plantains. He ordered the steak bowl, mild heat, jollof rice, white sauce and cornbread. The jollof rice was the star of the show! THICK, heavy and delicious. I could eat just a bowl of that rice. Both the chicken and steak had great flavor, but next time I will order spicy. Mild is not spicy whatsoever so if you like a little heat just order spicy or ask for the red sauce! Plantains and cornbread were both very good. Neither sides were sweet and just an overall nice balance with the dish. The side salad was extremely refreshing and a nice palette cleanser. Great good and friendly service! I cannot wait to return and try more things off their menu!
